A Call To The Harvest

Have you ever stopped to realize that God has called YOU into the harvest field?  Perhaps not?  But we need to realize that we have all been given a mission to fulfill.  As Christians, followers of Christ, we have all been given the duty to share our faith, to enter into the harvest fields and spread the good news around to as many people as we can.  So why aren’t we doing that?

Often we are not available because we are so busy.  A brand new lawyer in his brand new office on his first day in practice sees a prospective client walk in the door.  He decides he should look busy, so he picks up the phone and starts talking, “Look, Harry, about that big settlement deal.  I think I better run down to the factory and handle it personally.  Yes.  No.  I don’t think 3 million will swing it.  We better have Rogers from Seattle meet us there.  Okay.  Look, I have to go, call you back later.”

Then he looks up at the visitor and says, “Good morning, how may I help you?”  And the prospective client says, “You can’t help me at all.  I’m just here to hook up your phone.”

Jesus had something interesting to say about the harvest, and basically, He was calling us all to the fields.  In Luke chapter 10, starting in verse one, we read, “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place where He was about to go.  He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.  Go!  I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.”

Jesus told them, “The harvest is plentiful…, but the workers are few.”  This is a powerful piece of scripture that just seemed to jump right out of the page at us.  To me, it speaks volumes.  To me, it says there is a lot of work to be done, but not many of us wanting to do it.

Jesus knew that the time was right to send disciples out to tell people about God.  He basically told them, “Look, it’s going to be hard, you are going to come up against some tough circumstances and strong opposition.  You will be like lambs among wolves, you will be frightened and having to watch your back all the time.”  You see, Jesus knew that there would be opposition to them preaching a new message.  But, it was a message that still needed to be shared.

There were 3 things that I thought about when I read these words of scripture.  Number one, we need workers.  Number two, we have to go out into the field to reap the harvest.  And number three, hard work brings great rewards.  The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.  But the solution to this problem, Jesus tells us all, “GO!”

In Christ,
