Brief History of the Church: In 1849 a Restoration Evangelist held a meeting near the mouth of the Little Scioto River with a group of Christian people. In 1867 a church was organized with seventeen charter members and S.S. Doyle as the minister. For fifteen years they met in an old barn on Marshall Street. In 1880 they build a wooden church on the corner of Third and Bloom Streets. The land was donated by Mrs. Jeff Davis and was dedicated in 1881, with T.P. Degman as the minister.
In the late 20’s, under the leadership of Charles Reinhardt, minister, the church grew and there was a need for a larger building. The wooden church was moved to the rear of the lot and the present building was built and dedicated in 1924. In 1941 a fire caused considerable damage to the building. While the building was being restored, mostly by the men of the church under the supervision of Elder Ed Spray, the congregation met at East High School. In the late 40’s, a group of young married couples, led in a new spirit of Evangelism, formed Class 9, causing such a growth in attendance that the need for expansion led to the addition of the Education Wing. The church continues in the same spirit and truth that led the founders to form the Sciotoville Christian Church in 1867.
The Church expanded its facilities in 2004 with the addition of a Family Life Center building with an eye towards moving facilities across Third Street from its present location.
Synopsis of Recent History: Over the last ten years the church has struggled to consistently provide the level of preaching and pastoral care the congregation has come to expect.
